What is Shades for Migraine?

Shades for Migraine® is a global awareness campaign that challenges everyone to wear a pair of sunglasses on June 21 to show their support for the 1 billion people living with migraine disease worldwide. The campaign is getting better each year! See how you can take part and help spread the word.

Taking part is easy, just follow these three simple steps:

Step 1

Take a photo wearing shades on (or around) June 21st, to show you care for people living with migraine disease.

Step 2

Post your photo on social media with the hashtag #ShadesForMigraine

Step 3

Challenge 3 friends to take part, too! Watch your impact multiply.

Shades for Migraine is on a mission to make migraine awareness go viral!

CAMPAIGN GOALS

  1. Spark conversations about migraine - There are 1 billion living with migraine and unfortunately millions are dealing with the disease in silence. Migraine is an invisible disease but purple sunglasses are used to get people to start conversations about the condition. By people sharing their experiences, others will feel less alone in their journeys.
  2. Destigmatize the disease - For far too long migraine has been synonymous with "a headache". Migraine is a complex neurological disease that impacts nearly every body system. While it isn't deadly, the condition causes symptoms that rob people of their quality of life. Shades for Migraine gives people the platform to explain the true impact the disease has had on their lives. It is also an easy opportunity for people without migraine to learn about the condition and show they care about the people who live with it.
  3. Educate and empower people with migraine - Nearly half of the people living with migraine are undiagnosed and therefore untreated or undertreated. Shades for Migraine is led by a coalition of organizations devoted to educating people on migraine and headache diseases. This campaign is a vehicle to lead people to better resources and care.

Achieving these goals starts with raising awareness. Please join us in participating in Shades for Migraine whether or not you live with the condition. With 1 in 7 people living with the disease, nearly everyone knows someone living with migraine.

Why sunglasses?

As a result of the Shades for Migraine campaign, sunglasses, specifically with purple frames or lenses, have become globally recognized as the symbol of migraine awareness. Sunglasses are one of the few visible indicators that someone may be having a migraine attack. Sun and light sensitivity are one of the most common symptoms among people living with migraine, causing people to turn to their sunglasses for relief.

Whenever you feel like you're alone, know you're not
Whenever you need to put your health first, do it

Migraine doesn't discriminate. Attacks can bring even the most famous and successful people to their lowest point. Taking care of yourself because you have a debilitating migraine attack isn't a sign of weakness, it is a sign of strength.

Currently at a local high school representing Shades for Migraine and Migraine at School for their Wellness Fair this morning. So grateful for the opportunity to pass on my knowledge of migraine and headache disease. I’ve only been here 30 minutes but so far I’ve been told:
“It’s so cool you are doing this”
“I think I may have migraine”
“I didn’t know I could qualify for accommodations”
“Let’s all get sunglasses for X (this friend) whose out with a migraine today and send them a picture”

And of course educating two students on other terms they can use other than, “I always get migraine during X period”, especially when their friend just disclosed they live with migraine

This is why I volunteer. This is why this is important. Thank you for this opportunity and I’m grateful the school understood the importance of including migraine education and awareness in their wellness fair

I’ve been scarce lately. I’ve had some pain and migraine issues, and I’ve just felt a little disconnected.

I did make myself some butterscotch pudding with some whipped cream, really gave me a magical feel.

I’m not leaving the community, just more of a watch and hype up my amazing Potter/Magical Fam.

We are coming Ming up on June, which is Migraine awareness month. I’d like to organize something for June 21, which is Shades for Migraine Day. Do y’all think you’d be willing to take a pic of yourself in either Spectraspecs or Sunglasses? I want to put a reel or something Tik Tok like to mark the day.

I love y’all, and I’m still here, just quiet, shoot me a DM, or send me a voice message or video (I know a couple of Puffs who are awesome at that.

Also, if you’ve got a podcast and are interested in doing something about magic and disability I’m probably available if needed.

I had so much fun enjoying the spring weather with family despite a persistent migraine attack. I did my best to keep out the bright daylight, but it snuck in around my sunglasses. A painful experience.

If anyone has some suggestions for fashionable prescription sunglasses that have side shields, or are wrap around to keep out more light I would appreciate it. Preferably something more affordable, as I am not gentle with my sunglasses while adventuring.
